Think of your website
as a strategic investment but do not give up by
treating it as a cost. Websites are now great
sources of revenue as we have been pointing out in in
our ebusiness blog.
From our experience
designing websites, what we have learned is that you
need to treat this as a project with four stages:

in designing websites |

What to watch out for while designing websites?
- Your competition is only a click away.
Studies have shown that the most used feature of a
browser is the 'back' button.
- Keep the look of the website 'fresh' as you
would of a physical store. If your store
looks the same 365 days a year, customers will
think of you as stale. So change the design
with the seasons, holidays, festivals, etc.
- There is no one thing that matters in web
design. It is the combination of content,
images, layout, navigation, search, ease of use,
etc. that together create the right visitor
experience. So allocate your resources
accordingly to get everything right. Just to
emphasize the point, if your website has the
greatest products in the world but visitors can't
find them, you have a problem.
- Finally, we have found in our research that
websites can be used for branding purposes.
When visitors visit your website before they visit
your store (this is fairly standard now), they
already have an image in their mind. So you
can leverage your website to create the image that
you want and then reinforce it in your
store. Brand management at its best!
