This is extremely
important, particularly for small companies that do
not have the budgets for advertising. When you
appear on page one of a search in any of the major
search engines (we only worry about three search
engines: Google, Yahoo, and MSN), you are
driving visitors to your website without spending a
penny. Plus, when you are likely to be easily
found in a search, other webmasters are more likely to
put a link to your website, further enhancing your
popularity on the web and driving even more traffic to
your website.
While almost all
websites in the eCreativa network are fairly popular
in the niches in which they compete, we will share
with you how we took a blog to the top spot in
approximately one month. We launched the Vioxx
recall blog in the middle of November after we
heard from several of our readers who wanted more
balanced information (not provided by lawyers and
attorneys interested in filing lawsuits against Vioxx
manufacturer Merck). So this is how we did it
without the help of search engine optimization firms
(we did the optimization ourselves and we believe that
all competent webmasters should be able to do it on
their own) and without spending a penny:
- Content: As they say,
"Content is king." There is no
search engine and no reader that does not love
great content. When you create interesting
and useful content, not only will readers come,
the search engines will love you. So even if
you sell, widgets, create compelling content on
your website on how to use your widgets.
- Go with a blog: Yes, it is
OK to have a website but blog is the way to go
these days. And update it frequently.
We updated the Vioxx
recall blog several times a day during the
one-month period.
- Pick the anchor text carefully and be
consistent: We knew that it was a
bad idea to go with "Vioxx" so we went
with "Vioxx recall" which was much
easier. We used the same content on every
link from every website or blog in the eCreativa
network. Now remember that we have over
4,000 pages in our network and we can get as many
links in no time and if you do not have this
advantage you will need to make this happen by
either requesting a link or paying for it.
Definitely an investment worth making.
- Register with the directories:
Registering a blog is still free but if you have a
website then you must register it with major
search engines and directories even if you have to
pay for it (though Google is still free).
